Professor Jaime Vera is a Consultant in HIV Medicine at the Lawson Unit and holds a Chair in HIV Medicine at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) where is is the Head of Department of Global Health and Infection. His research primarily focuses on HIV and ageing, with a particular interest in understanding the impact of comorbidities and cognitive impairment in people living with HIV. Professor Vera leads innovative studies aimed at improving the quality of life and mental well-being of these patients through the development of brain imaging techniques and interventions that address neuroinflammation associated with HIV.
In his clinical role, Professor Vera oversees the combined HIV and geriatrics, and memory clinics, which provide specialised care for older adults with HIV. His work extends to HIV prevention, where he has spearheaded projects such as the creation of digital vending machines for HIV self-testing, recognised with a BMJ Award for innovation.
In addition to his clinical work, Professor Vera is actively involved in international HIV clinical trials and serves as the principal investigator for multiple studies, including collaborations in both high- and low-income settings aimed at improving access to sexual and reproductive health services. As part of Brighton’s Fast-Track City initiative, he is committed to achieving the city’s goal of zero new HIV infections, zero deaths, and zero stigma by 2030.
